Miguel Bombarda 54

The rehabilitation and expansion project at Avenida Miguel Bombarda, nº 54, in Lisbon, is exemplary in how it combines innovation and sensitivity in the intervention of a historic building of great heritage value. Located in the heart of the city, this project goes beyond mere conservation, also aiming to enhance the building’s significance by adding two new residential floors, which were carefully integrated into the existing structure.

Preserving the building’s original architecture was one of the main objectives of the intervention, reflecting a deep respect for its role as a vital component of the urban fabric and the housing experience in the city. The historic façade was restored with precision, ensuring that the architectural elements that define the identity of the building and its surroundings were kept intact. The new additions, although contemporary, were designed to harmonize with the proportions, materials and textures of the original building, creating visual and aesthetic continuity.

Inside, the reinterpretation of the heritage was approached with special care, aiming to establish a harmonious dialog between the building’s history and contemporary functional and aesthetic requirements. This approach has allowed for a subtle updating of the spaces, which now offer greater functionality and comfort without compromising the historical integrity of the building. The interventions were designed to improve the living experience while remaining faithful to the property’s heritage essence.

The extension of the building, with the addition of new floors, introduces living spaces that combine the charm of traditional architecture with modern amenities. The new areas were designed to optimize the entry of natural light and the panoramic views over Lisbon, providing a distinctive and enriching living experience in the city center.

This project illustrates a continuous dialog between old and new, where heritage architecture is not only preserved, but also valued and reinterpreted in a contemporary context. The intervention plays a significant role in revitalizing the building and its surrounding area, keeping Lisbon’s history and character alive, while making room for new urban narratives that reflect the city’s evolution.

This rehabilitation project for a historic building in Lisbon exemplifies the studio’s ability to carry out complex floor extension operations in Lisbon with a link between the new and the existing. Located in Bairro das Galerias (Miguel Bombarda), it is a benchmark in qualified urban rehabilitation in the capital.
